Does a prong really make a difference compared to a flat collar?
Will the prong hurt my pup?
As with most things regarding dog training, there are different schools of thought when it comes to using a prong collar on a dog. We’ve found that a prong collar can be very useful when dealing with a very stubborn or reactive dog. For example, if you’re walking your dog and they become extremely distracted by things around them or if they are excited about meeting everyone you come across, it’s good to have a way to remind them that their focus needs to be on you. Using a flat collar and leash or a slip lead doesn’t always provide a strong enough correction for an easily distracted dog. The prong collar also eliminates the need for a very strong correction. When a dog pulls and creates tension on that prong collar, it will pinch slightly and this usually makes the dog self-correct. Therefore, this makes it easier on the human to correct any unwanted behavior.Does the prong collar hurt the dog? The answer is no. While the prong does pinch, it doesn’t in any way cause damage or injure your pup. When used correctly, most dogs don’t even mind when the collar is put on because they understand that wearing the collar means they’re going to go somewhere, and they need to be paying attention to their master. If you have a strong-willed pup, the prong collar is also a reminder to them of who is in control. When walking your pup, you should be the one in control, not the dog. This is where the prong collar can be very beneficial.
